Royal Melbourne Show 2014

Last September 20, we visited the Royal Melbourne Show located in the Melbourne Showgrounds. We caught a train in Flinders Station that brought us straight to the event. Donn and I bought our tickets($36) right there. We could have saved $8 if we bought it from woolies ($32/ticket). O well..lesson learned! As we entered, we headed over the booth to buy the super trail bag for $12. We started our trail with determination and motivation.

It wasn't as crowded as I expected. Maybe because it was the opening day. The weather was nice, neither hot nor cold. Perfect for faux leather jacket that I was wearing. We started with the Taste of Victoria Pavilion. We could finished the stamps quicker but I got easily distracted with the free food tasting.

One of the major highlights was when we visited the Masterchef Kitchen. Mae and Gab were so thrilled to see the MasterChef Australia winners, they even took a picture with them. Donn and I had no idea because we didn't watch it (Sorry!). But we took a picture with the pretty first runner up winner.

We were able to complete all the stamps and collected our gifts and prizes. My favourite? Flashlight, coffee drinkware, and cupcake soap! Least favourite? ref magnets and gift certificate..C'mon guys.. You could do better than that.

We also had the photo op on the X factor stage and Big brother confession room.

The rides were terrifying..from my point of reference. The rides cost $7-10 per ticket.  I didn't have the guts to even try the kiddy ride. Sorry no reviews for that. Before we left, we bought cadbury and lollies showbags for $10. Overall, it was a fun experience albeit a bit pricey. Is it worth it? I think it depends who you are with..I would say..Definitely!

What to do in Brighton Beach? (Brighton Bathing Boxes)

Brighton Beach
Aussie Day. My hubby and I decided to visit Brighton Beach because I have always wanted to see the famous Brighton Bathing Boxes. So, we hopped in the Sandringham Railway Line at the Flinders Station and got off at Brighton Beach Railway Station. I couldn’t believe it was only 23 minutes away from the city. It was really beautiful but the weather was extremely hot. Way too hot to walk. I felt my skin burned. Nonetheless, I was amazed how the Aussies didn’t seem bothered by the scorching sun. Most of them just baked their body tan. Being an Asian, we came with our cap, glasses, and umbrella.  Funny sight for some but I couldn’t let the sun hurt my skin. Sorry! My skin is already damaged; I don’t want to add more. I observed that the ladies wore 2-piece swimsuit regardless of the body shape. Mad props for the confidence! Too bad, I was so self-conscious of my body that I didn’t even bother bringing mine with me. Oh! How I wish I had my swimsuit!
With my hubby

We had our dinner at some random café near the beach. The slushies really helped with the heat.
My raspberry slushie

We strolled along the beach looking for the bath box but not until we found a perfect spot for us to rest… shady and grassy. We lay there and enjoyed the view for some time. Our friends arrived after a couple of hours. They brought spaghetti and dorritos…both my favorites!

Our View from our picnic area
Afterwards, we walked our way to the famous Brighton Bath Boxes. So cute! So colourful and vibrant! However, I noticed that very few people rented those tiny boxes. My friend told me they are expensive, maybe that’s why. All I know is that they look good in photos. So we took tons of photos.

Our wonderful day ended while we watched the breathtaking sunset.

Surely, the best things in life are free.

Myki Noob No More

When we first arrived in Melbourne, it was no walk in the park. However, there are some people who helped us cope up with the lifestyle of a Filo (Filipino Australian). More often than not, you arrive here in Australia knowing no one but the friend of your relatives or a friend of a friend. They will become your new found peeps that will help you in times of need or bewilderment (must say!).We will forever grateful for all the help we received.

Tita Carole and Me

We were so thankful that Tita Carol visited our humble home. She brought us some brochures about Melbourne trains and trams. She told us where are the best places to stay and where to stay away. She thoroughly explained to us where to get a Myki card and how to use it (She works in Metro Train). However, all we can give was a blank stare because we couldn’t completely grasp all the information given to us (information overload). I thought Myki Card was like the MRT card. I soon realised that it was a little different to be compared.

In the Philippines, every time you use the MRT train you have to buy a card ticket. The transportation fee will be based on your stop. The farther your destination, the more you pay for the ticket. Pay as you go, very simple. You cannot use the MRT card on buses. For buses, you need to pay cash. In Melbourne, you can use the Myki Card (which cost $6 – no load yet) on buses, trains, and trams

Trams are like MRT  Trains on street but slower

Melbourne is divided into 2 zones, zone 1 = city and zone 2 = suburbs (suburbs are like Cavite and Antipolo, very far from the city). If you travel around zone 1, they will charge your Myki Card $7.00 two-way ($3.50 one-way). Regardless on how far your destination will be as long as it is in zone 1, they will charge you the same. What is the good thing about it? $7 is the maximum cost of travel everyday. So you can travel as many times (back and forth) in one day and still be charge with $7. Not really sure about the buses because we rarely use it. Make sure that you touch on and touch off (place your Myki Card on the green scanner) before and after you ride the trains. For trams, you just have to touch on, no need to touch off (it’s automatic according to the brochure). You need to do this because there are card inspectors who will randomly check your myki cards, if they found out that you didn't touch on or touch off you will be charged with $200 (true!).

I am also thankful that Anna personally showed me how to top up (term for loading or recharge) the Myki Card. You can load up your card using the myki machines or you can top it up in 7-11 stores.
There are also customer service counter in the train station if you need to ask for more information.

I also want to thank Kim for informing me that the white part of the Myki Card should be scanned on the green thingy. Thanks to Mariel who explained to us in simple terms the definition of $7 cap (I just explained what it is). How could I forget, Pat, who was with us on our very first tram ride.

Grinning for our very first tram ride

It’s little complicated to understand at first but you will get the hang of it. I don’t want to overboard you with heaps of information about Myki card because it will confuse you. Trust me, it happened to me. You can always check this site for more details http://ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/.

September Already? Goal # 1 Be Healthy

Wow, it's already September. How time flies! It feels like yesterday when we arrived in the cold city of Melbourne. Now, I get to experience another season.. Spring! I can finally wear the clothes I brought from the Philippines(Yehey!)

As I face this season, I decided to make some changes in my life as well. Of course, I started with defining simple goals. I want to achieve my goals in 30 days.

First of all, I want to concentrate on my health. I want to become healthy! I don't want to wake up tired anymore. I want to feel energised! I usually sleep 7 hours plus 2 hours nap. But whenever I get up I still feel like blah. I blame it on the chocolates and sugary sweets I love to gobble up.

I don't want to pressure myself so these are just simple steps I want to do in order to reach my goal.

1.) Drink 2 litres of water everyday.
2.) Get 8 hours of sleep.
3.) Minimise rice intake (I am a Filipino, it's really part of our everyday meal)
4.) 15 mins of jogging everyday.
5.) One sugary treat per week (Maltesers? M &M ? I need a reward for all the hardwork I will be doing!)
6.) Follow this full body challenge routine. ( I forgot where I downloaded this, sorry!)
Good thing, I am not into beef, pork, lamb, and kangaroos. I won't feel deprived if I don't consume any of those meat.  I can totally nosh on chicken, fish, veggies and fruits. Trying to become a  pescetarian but I sometimes find Salmon a little too fishy. Well, I think I am gearing towards becoming a flexitarian (Hello, roasted chicken? Yum). I still haven't decided yet. So again, Good luck to me!!!

Free Melbourne City Tour, Free Wifi Spots and Kangaroo Meat

Hello Again, as I have said in my previous blog our first few days in Melbourne were the most difficult.  On our second day, I was dying to speak with my sisters. I wanted to tell them that we arrived safely in Melbourne. However, I did not have enough load to text them (even though I still have $3 worth of load, I wanted to save it for emergency purposes). Besides, I really wanted to see them using the video call. The internet connection in the service apartment comes with a hefty price of $5 an hour. I didn't want to pay that much.

All that we had was the Huawei Pocket Wifi and our Ipads. If you will visit Melbourne, smartphone is a must. It is beneficial, for example you can check the arrival of the tram using the tram tracker app. If you want to go somewhere, you can always use the PTV journal planner website to get there. . Really helpful for newcomers and tourists. Of course, Facebook..Need I say more?

My hubby and I decided to take the Melbourne Visitor Shuttle wherein you can visit the famous tourist spots in the city of Melbourne for free. At first, we thought it was the double decker bus. We realised that it was a different tour when they started asking for a $35 payment. Apparently, this wasn't the bus we were looking for. So, when we saw another bus arrived with a sign that says Melbourne FREE Visitor Shuttle, we were pretty sure it was the correct one so we hopped in. We visited a lot of places, but I dozed off most of the time. My hubby would woke me up once in awhile if he saw something amazing. We were excited to visit the Queen Victoria Market but got disappointed when we got there. It was closed because it was a Monday (They are close on Mondays and Wednesdays, don’t know why).  We didn't get to take a lot of pictures because my card memory was pretty full.

 MCG Stadium
We didn't know what was the name of the place but it looked historical so we took a photo.
 Federation Square
 Flinders Railway Station

Melbourne Museum

After the tour, we went to Federation Square for the Free Wifi (Yipee!). Even though, I didn’t get the chance to speak with my sisters I just left them a bunch of Facebook messages. We spoke with my Tita Mina (“The Cool Tita”) and my in-laws.  We had to bid our goodbyes because our body couldn’t take the cold temperature anymore.

The first three days in the city, all we do is walk and walk. Even though the tram was right in front of us we still preferred walking. Why? It would be easier for us to learn the city and of course we didn’t know how to ride the tram. I tried reading the brochure about Melbourne transportation; but I still couldn’t understand it.  Tram looks little intimidating, so we chose to walk our way to our destination. We thought it was a good exercise. But..Oh boy! It could really test your strength and endurance especially when you have to walk 3km while carrying 5 kilos of groceries. Tired as a dog, I felt like we lose 2 lbs or more because of all the walking we have done.

We had our dinner at Hungry Jacks (Thanks for the free one-hour wifi). Finally, I had the chance to speak with my sisters. I really missed them. While holding back my tears, I tried to show them what Melbourne looks like. I showed them a poor picture of Bourke Street and Russell Street from my Ipad. I showed the food that I was eating using video call. My sisters and I were so excited to talk to each other but it was cut short because I already consumed the one-hour wifi. An hour of chikahan was not enough. I went home still trying to contain myself.  At home, my husband comforted me as usual and promised me that we will buy mobile broadband sim first thing in the morning.

The next day, my husband and I decided to buy the Vodafone sim broadband. It has the best deal among the Internet providers. We paid $2 for the sim card and $39 for 3GB. Imagine, 3GB for both of us! I didn’t think it would last. We are both heavy Internet users. My hubby likes to download stuff from the Internet and I am a self-confessed Youtube addict. Well, a little sacrifice wouldn’t hurt said my hubby. The 3GB lasted for 2 weeks with no Youtubes and video calls; we strictly used it for chatting and emailing. We also bought 2 Optus Phone simcard for $30 each (pre-loaded with $30) because most of the people we know use Optus. Optus offers unlimited call and text and free use of social media. Unfortunately, we couldn’t maximise the freebies because none of us has smartphone. Initially, we thought it would work on my Lenovo phone but it did not.  One of our greatest regrets is not buying Iphone in the Philippines. It was way cheaper and has flexible payment terms.

My hubby and I had our first grocery shopping in Coles. We spent $50 worth of groceries. My husband insisted on buying Kangaroo meat while I bought minced turkey (It was $2 cheaper than chicken for a special deal). When we got home, my husband asked me to cook the kangaroo meat for dinner. The moment I opened the cover, I was shocked with the smell. I wasn’t sure if it was the marinade but I really couldn’t tolerate the smell. I fried the meat, still wasn’t sure if I did it correctly.

My first attempt to cook kangaroo meat

For my dinner, I cooked my own stir-fried veggies with minced turkey. Since, it was my husband’s kangaroo request, he had no choice but to eat it all. He said it was like a chicken liver with a rubbery texture. Well, I am not into liver and rubber, so I did not dare taste it.  I can still remember his face of displeasure while finishing the kangaroo meat. It looked like he was going to vomit. Maybe, I cooked it wrong. I do not know.  I just do not like the idea of cooking and eating kangaroos. They are way too cute and adorable in TV and pictures, aren't they?

My First Melbourne experience

I created this blog to share my life experience in Melbourne, Australia. This will let my family and friends know what I am doing in my life - in detail.

My husband and I arrived in Melbourne last July 2013. Until now. I still can't believe that I am actually living in a different country. The first few days were the most difficult. From the airport, we took the taxi van which cost us a whopping AUD $85 (Php 3400.00).

It was really difficult to carry 2 large boxes, 3 luggages and 2 bags. Good thing that my ever-reliable husband brought a cart which made it easier for us to transfer the boxes to the service apartment. When we got here, it was really cold. I didn't realise that wearing a synthetic knitted jacket and a shirt were not enough because golly I was freezing! When we got to the service apartment, our room was not yet available so we had no choice but to wait in the business room.  Feeling jet lagged, we sat in the couch and slept like a baby.   After 2 hours, the receptionist woke us up to inform that we can go to our room now. We stayed in one fully furnished flat with one bath tub (yehey!). Small but very cosy, enough for a young married couple. But when we got in the room, feeling really lethargic..all we wanted to do was to sleep.

When we woke up it was already 2:30 in the afternoon, we still have time to stroll around the city. Not only that, we were both famished. So we went outside to find food. I felt sudden comfort when I saw the 711 store because it was something familiar to me (who doesn't).

Feeling a little adventurous, we decided to look for another food store. Since it was my first day, I had to take my photo opportunity.

And of course, with my hubby..

As we walked passed by Russell Street, we saw Target Centre. Once again, another familiar store (Not that we have Target in the Philippines, I usually watch youtube gurus buy stuff from Target). Our very first dinner was composed of Beef Noodles and California Maki. It was delicious for someone who was very hungry. It cost us $2 for the Maki, $18 for two big bowls of Beef Noodles and $4.80 for the 2 bottled water. We had to refill our water using the water fountain( still wasn't sure if it is clean and safe). For a newcomer, I consider our meal very expensive because in the Philippines these would only cost us like $4.

I checked how much a haircut cost. Look at that.. $25 for ladies while you have to pay $15 for men. I usually pay $4 for my haircut in the Philippines. I knew I was being ridiculous, comparing the cost and all. Please bear with me, I just got here. Not only that, I am also known for being stingy.

We head home after our dinner. We watched TV shows that I barely understood (except for MasterChef - food needs no words) and really crappy commercials. Because of the jet lag, we couldn't help ourselves but to sleep. Zzzzzz...

Alright, until the next blog. Thank you for reading!

Love,
Nikki D.
